| Greening Duluth |
A local initiative supported by the House of Friendship.
Greening Duluth is a volunteer-run, community-based project aiming to breathe life into our neighbourhood by creating green spaces, people spaces, and opportunities for people to gather. Since starting in 2008 we have held workshops, brunches, conferences, discussions, social, concerts, classes and other activities. Last spring (2009), in our biggest project to date, we transformed half of the parking lot in front of the House of Friendship into a garden, pathway and community space. We received the funding through donations from the local Caisse Desjardins on St Laurent, Soverdi, numerous discounts and deals and the help of 75 volunteers and a really committed project team.
Now we are exploring a long term plan to really green our neighbourhood, working in partnership with Local Association of the Plateau. We held a forum on Community Greening on March 3rd at the House of Friendship, with results to be published soon.
We are also organizing gardening workshops to start towards the end of March.
If you would like to get involved, take a class, organize an event or otherwise take part, please contact Cameron Stiff, founder and coordinator, at greeningduluth@gmail.com or leave a message at 514-843-4356, ext. 224. Or stop by the MA sometime - we're not always there but we're there often enough. You can also join our group on Facebook - just search Greening Duluth.
Happy Spring!

Transformation parking Garden
May 22, 2009: Volunteers welcome!
Starting this summer, Greening Duluth has been approved for a project of greening Soverdi (Society Greening). Soverdi is an independent nonprofit's mission of urban green spaces, especially those in poor condition and in particular institutions or industry. Our project aims to create an urban cool island antithesis of an urban heat island, which is to take a town lot, which exacerbates the heat of a summer day and turn it into a pleasant place to be A new use of green space in the city!
With our project, the parking lot outside the House of Friendship will be partly transformed into green space, removing the heat-absorbing asphalt and replace with soil and plants. Evapotranspiration will cool the immediate area and adjacent offices, while providing a larger surface to absorb rainwater instead of creating more runoff into the sewer system. Soverdi Greening Duluth help achieve its overall goals of creating a green corridor between the parks and the promotion of some of our themes, such as planting, the use of permaculture principles (such as using native plant additional permanent and autonomous control area), with emphasis on community, and create a space where the House of Friendship residents, students, staff and neighbors, can relax and interact. This spring will be an inspiration for the neighborhood.
